Dr. Evans: A Commitment to Community Safety

Background: Dr. Evans is a native of Philadelphia who has lived in Detroit, Michigan, for several years. Throughout his life, he has witnessed the senseless violence that affects law-abiding citizens across this great nation. Dr. Evans served as the lead liaison to the Detroit Police Department for Family Services of Detroit and Wayne County’s Family Trouble Clinic, addressing domestic violence and community conflict. He has also participated in Philadelphia’s Police Clergy program, supporting efforts to foster peaceful coexistence within communities.

As a certified firearms instructor for both the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) and the National Rifle Association (NRA), Dr. Evans is committed to safety and education. He also holds certification as a Range Safety Officer. Additionally, he is an avid supporter of the men and women serving in our police departments and law enforcement agencies.

The Problem and the Need

Dr. Evans emphasizes the challenges faced by communities impacted by crime. Growing up in inner-city neighborhoods, he has seen how certain individuals exploit the law and victimize others. The prevalence of illegal weapons and the targeting of law-abiding citizens highlight the critical need for a robust police presence.

He strongly believes that defunding the police would disproportionately harm impoverished communities, which often rely on law enforcement for protection. Despite their best efforts, law enforcement can only respond to incidents after they occur—such as shootings, muggings, and assaults.

Moreover, the issues of illegal immigration and competition for scarce resources exacerbate crime rates, leading to increased incidents of robbery, assault, and murder. As fear grows among law-abiding citizens for their safety and that of their loved ones, many turn to their Second Amendment rights for self-defense.

The Law and the Aftermath

Dr. Evans highlights two key principles that law-abiding citizens must understand when obtaining firearms for self-protection:

  1. Safe and Efficient Use of Firearms
    • Training is essential to ensure firearm safety and prevent accidental discharges, which could harm oneself or others. Safety should be the paramount concern for all gun owners.
  2. Understanding Legal Consequences
    • Many believe that explaining an incident to the police will suffice after a self-defense shooting. However, the reality is that individuals often face arrest, booking, and even trial to prove their innocence. Various legal nuances could lead to conviction even if the use of force was justified. Therefore, it is crucial to receive training and understand state laws regarding self-defense incidents.

Dr. Evans urges anyone considering firearm ownership to prioritize training.

Why Focus on Houses of Worship?

As a former pastor and clinical social worker, Dr. Evans recognizes that houses of worship are particularly vulnerable as “soft targets.” Assailants know these venues typically lack armed protection, increasing the risk of violence.

Dr. Evans reflects, “During my 30+ years in ministry, I often had to consider the safety of my worshipers due to community conditions. Every enlightened church should maintain vigilance regarding activities in and around their gatherings. Today, congregations must implement proactive measures to ensure their safety at all times.”
